Graduate Design Engineer 

Role Description

Our Graduate Design Engineer role requires the application of engineering and scientific principles to deliver and optimise safe, sustainable solutions for the design, construction, production, and operation of systems, devices, machines, structures, and processes through the full lifecycle from requirements, to design, manufacture, testing and commissioning.

An enthusiasm for engineering combined with the ability to analyse problems and develop effective solutions using a sound understanding of engineering principles within a chosen discipline. A practical background is preferred but a willingness to learn and develop is necessary.

The ability to communicate is essential with good verbal and written communication skills to convey technical information clearly to non-engineers and stakeholders.

It is a broad and diverse role involving working both individually and in internal multi-disciplinary teams as well as with the end user in different locations. The role requires the practicing of sustainability, integrity, ethics, diversity, and inclusion to deliver a successful solution.

The responsibilities will vary and may include functional and management tasks, which require an understanding of commercial implications and compliance with legal requirements.

Responsibilities & Duties

As a Graduate Design Engineer at M5tec, your responsibilities may include:

  • Creating and optimizing products, systems, and components to meet specific needs and requirements with a focus on collaboration, innovation and problem-solving
  • Creating and developing systems, components, or products through a structured approach that involves conceptualization, analysis, design optimization, and material selection
  • Using sound principles of mechanics, materials science, and creativity to transform ideas into functional and efficient designs, that are safe and meet the specific requirements and industry standards.
  • The creation of detailed technical drawings, CAD, prototypes and simulations to validate the product’s performance, manufacturability, and sustainability.
  • Supporting concept, detailed, and layout design activities
  • Assisting with manufacture, build, testing, trials, and commissioning activities
  • Working closely with electrical, control, software, and structural engineers to deliver integrated solutions
  • Engaging with clients, stakeholders, and end users, helping translate technical information into clear, practical outcomes
  • Supporting project delivery while developing an understanding of commercial, contractual, and regulatory requirements
  • Adhering to engineering standards, quality procedures, and health & safety requirements

What We’re Looking For

  • A degree (or expected degree) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. Minimum 2nd class degree qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent experience
  • A genuine enthusiasm for engineering and problem-solving
  • The ability to analyse problems and develop effective solutions 
  • A sound understanding of core mechanical engineering principles
  • A practical mindset, hands-on experience is beneficial, but a willingness to learn is essential
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-engineers
  • The ability to work effectively both independently and within multi-disciplinary teams
  • A professional approach aligned with sustainability, integrity, ethics, diversity, and inclusion
